Native News Online shined a spotlight on Navajo chef Brian Yazzie, who is working with local tribes and and farms to provide food to his community's elders. In addition to serving food to those in need, Yazzie is using indigenous trade routes to seek inspiration for his dishes. According to a recent article written by Valerie Vande Panne for Native News Online, Yazzie "sources what he can from local tribes and farms, and turns to other tribes and Indigenous peoples to fill food needs."
Chef Yazzie uses this exchange of food to restore the historical trade connections created by tribes around the world. The Native News Online article quotes Yazzie: "It tells the story about how being Indigenous, we don't see borders or state lines," Yazzie says. "We see our cultures and trade routes. Now we can pick up the phone. It’s an evolving practice, staying true to ancestral trade routes."
