Last week, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland announced that Joel West Williams (Cherokee Nation) would be appointed deputy solicitor for Indian Affairs. In addition, Tracy Canard Goodluck (Oneida Nation of Wisconsin) was appointed by Haaland as a senior adviser to the assistant secretary for Indian affairs.
“We’ve never seen so much Native leadership,” Kevin Washburn, a former Interior assistant secretary for Indian Affairs, told E&E News, adding that “we have seen less pigeonholing of Natives into the obvious positions, such as in Indian Affairs.”
