Chief Standing Bear, a leader of the Ponca tribe, is being honored with a Forever stamp featuring his portrait. In 1879, Chief Standing Bear's lawsuit allowed Native Americans to be considered persons with inherent rights under the law. The stamp depicts him in a blue shirt and a golden medallion with a background of soft orange hues. In the courtroom, he famously said, "I am a man," which resulted in a landmark ruling that a Native American is a person with inherent rights under the law. The stamp serves as a symbol of pride and perseverance for the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska and all Native Americans. Forever stamps have honored important figures in the United States since 2007.
